Final Words & Conclusion
Mini PCs have gained popularity for their compact design, practical functionality, and decent performance. They are especially useful in environments where space is limited, such as small offices or dorm rooms. While they may not be the first choice for hardcore gamers due to their generally less powerful graphics capabilities, they are excellent for general computing tasks and can serve well as workstations or student computers. One of the standout features of mini PCs is their VESA compatibility, which allows them to be mounted directly behind a monitor. This feature helps maintain a clean and organized workspace by minimizing clutter on the desk. Over the years, mini PCs have shown remarkable improvements in terms of capabilities, with newer models increasingly challenging their limitations, particularly in graphics performance. For example, the 185H model of a mini PC includes a more advanced integrated graphics processor. This model, equipped with 32GB of system memory, can handle gaming at Full HD resolution (1920x1080 pixels) reasonably well. While Intel is making progress, it still lags behind AMD in terms of overall graphics performance, aside from synthetic testing where the SoC shined in Time Spy. Nonetheless, the advancements suggest that mini PCs are becoming more versatile, and capable of managing more graphically intensive applications than before. When it comes to performance metrics, it's crucial to consider that the highest quality settings in gaming may require adjustments to achieve smoother gameplay. Mini PCs equipped with Xess technology, if available, or those that allow for the lowering of image quality settings, can perform better, reaching closer to the desired 40-60 frames per second (FPS) range. Our tests on a specific model, equipped with 32GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD, have shown that mini PCs can deliver reliable and even impressive performance under demanding conditions. The GEEKOM Mini PC, while not primarily designed for gaming, still manages to hold its own in graphics performance tests, such as 3DMark and various game benchmarks. By compromising on higher image quality settings and resolution, users can enjoy a reasonable gaming experience.
Concluding
The ASUS NUC 14 Pro+ is a compact computer that delivers solid performance with exceptional energy efficiency. It's equipped with a powerful processor, making it an excellent choice for multitasking and handling demanding graphics tasks. This model features high-quality integrated graphics that can support ultra-high-definition display resolutions, including up to 8K,gaming however will be limited towards full HD. One of the standout features of this computer is its connectivity options. It includes the latest Thunderbolt ports, which allow for rapid data transfers at speeds up to 40 Gbps when used with compatible devices. The device also supports WiFi 6E, providing faster and more stable internet connections over dual bands, including both 5 GHz and 6 GHz frequencies. Additionally, it comes with Bluetooth 5.3 and a 2.5Gbps Ethernet port for robust wired networking options. It's well-equipped with various USB ports, including USB 3.2 Gen 2 and USB 2.0, to cater to different peripheral needs. The ASUS NUC 14 Pro+ is also fitted with several other useful features. What I found lacking is an SD card reader for easy access to external storage, and a 3.5 mm audio jack for headphones or speakers, it has a duo of HDMI outputs for monitor connections, and a slot for a Kensington security lock to secure the device. The NUC also offers great single-thread performance and pretty good multi-thread performance. This makes it a practical choice for a desktop workstation capable of handling heavy computing tasks and streaming Ultra HD content effectively on platforms like YouTube. However, it should be noted that during intense operations, especially those that strain the CPU, the device may produce noticeable fan noise as the SoC runs to well over 100 Degrees C (which is bothersome). The ASUS NUC 14 Pro+ comes pre-installed with Windows 11 Pro and is priced roughly $875, which we find too much money for a mini PC. Combined with its robust specifications and comprehensive set of features, makes it a compelling option for users seeking a powerful and feature-packed computing solution.
